Today’s job market in the musical theatre is more demanding than ever. Rarely, these days, can a performer make a career out of being just a singer or a dancer. Today’s musical theatre scene demands that a performer be equal parts actor, dancer and singer--in other words a “triple threat.” The primary focus of this course is the development of essential skills and techniques necessary to perform material for the musical theatre. The students are taught practical methods that encompass the integration of acting principles as well as singing techniques to prepare for musical theatre performance. Students will also view a series of films and clips of performances in the musical theatre. Classroom discussions will enhance the experience as students apply what they have viewed to their own work. Instructors will place special emphasis on recognizing character types, choosing suitable audition material, “selling a song”, and peer review. Performance work in classroom is included. A full spectrum of musical theatre repertoire will be covered. Students will also learn how to prepare, organize, and present resumes and headshots.
