Afternoon Concert
Now You Has Jazz
Cole Porter, Jazz Man I
Fri, Aug 5, 2:30 - 4:00 pm
Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute
Despite his own relative indifference to and even open dislike for the jazz idiom, Cole Porter's music lends itself to jazz interpretation exceptionally well. While this will be made abundantly clear throughout this year's festival, Dick Hyman has dedicated two Afternoon Concerts to a special consideration of Cole Porter as a "jazz man"—next Thursday's I Get A Kick Out Of You and today's Now You Has Jazz. While several of our vocalists will be on hand for each concert (how can one ever avoid Porter's lyrics entirely?!), the emphasis will be on instrumental. The Porter's gems to receive "the treatment" by Dick and guest artists Randy Sandke, Peter Appleyard, Frank Capp, Mike Denny and Doug Miller on today's program include "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Anything Goes", "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?", and "It's De-Lovely". Ty Stephens and Shirley Andress are on hand on these and other tunes, including "Let's Fly Away", "Weren't We Fools?" and (we guarantee) a much hipper version of "Now You Has Jazz" than that offered by Bing in High Society!
